“Let’s get another cup of coffee and sit down. It’s time we had that talk.”
She got the coffee pot and we sat on the sofa in front of the fireplace. I looked at her, waiting.
“I’m in a lot of trouble,” she began. “Let me tell you how it happened and then you can tell me what to do about it. I was dealing blackjack on the evening shift and had just come on duty. It was a Tuesday night and Tuesdays are usually slow, especially early, and there were only one or two players at my table when all of a sudden all hell broke loose. Three men had gotten into the cashier’s cage somehow, they thought later it was an inside job, and were holding it up, but I didn’t know it at the time and was just dealing to the players at the table. They scooped all the money and chips into bags and then ran for the door but someone gave the alarm before they got out of the casino and the guards came after them. They tried to shoot their way out and the guards shot back and everyone hit the floor or ran for the exits but me. I was scared to death and just froze when the shooting started and couldn’t move. One of the robbers ran right by me and he had already been shot and was covered with blood and I think he knew he was going to die because he looked at me and said, clear as day, ‘Have fun, blondie,’ and dropped the bag he was carrying right at my feet and kept on running. I knew it was full of money and I don’t know why I did it but I kicked it under the table and threw my coat on top of it. The casino was going crazy and everyone was running for the doors, even the pit bosses, and I thought the bosses looking down from above us were probably freaked out too, so I picked up the bag with my coat over it and ran for the door. When I got outside I didn’t know what to do with the bag and then I saw the Treasure Island lagoon and I ran over to it. Everyone had left the lagoon to see what the excitement was all about so I counted down three vertical railings from the end closest to the pirate ship and I threw the bag in and it sank like a rock.”

That’s not fair. I did not steal a bag of money from the casino. I threw it in the lagoon. It’s still on their property and that’s not stealing.
